Classical Orders story and cover, May 2024 Wallpaper*

I am delighted to share my Classical Orders story and cover for May 2024 Wallpaper* photographed by Beppe Brancato in Milan.

In a set made of Marsotto’s classic Roman travertine and topped with Pompeiian red or raw Sienna this story is rich with classical and neo-classical art from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries as well as modern and contemporary works. Key to this story is Barcelona-based artist Sergio Roger who reinterprets and subverts iconic elements of historic Roman art, by using antique linen in place of stone.  Textiles are an essential element, as well as Roger, I introduced work by Bari-born Franca Marano (1920-2015) in medieval canvas and thread and the contemporary Berlin-based artist Sophie Rowley who works in jute and cotton. In leather there are the ‘Single Hide’ chairs, 2023, by Anne Holtrop for At.Kollektive and Formafantasma’s Bladder water containers, 2012, by from Giustini /Stagetti.

The cover features Rodolfo Dordoni's ‘Pilotis’ console, 2023, for Minotti,  Bas-Relief I ,2023, by Sergio Roger, in mixed media & plant-dyed antique linen, courtesy of Spazio Nuovo Contemporary Art, a pair of urn shaped vases decorated with the Four Seasons, Rome, ca. 1770-80, in marble, courtesy of Walter Padovani, Jean Puiforcat’s 1937 Fruit Platter, in silver with gold gilded handles from Puiforcat in a set made of Travertino Romano Classico by Marsotto.
